Phylogeography of Burkholderia pseudomallei Isolates, Western Hemisphere
The bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei causes melioidosis, which is mainly associated with tropical areas. We analyzed single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) among genome sequences from isolates of B. pseudomallei that originated in the Western Hemisphere by comparing them with genome sequences of isolates that originated in the Eastern Hemisphere. Analysis indicated that isolates from the Wes...
متن کاملAngiostrongylus (parastrongylus) Cantonensis in the Western Hemisphere
Angiostrongylus (Parastrongylus) cantonensis, the rat lungworm, was once considered primarily endemic to Asia and the Pacific Basin. The nematode was first described from China, but throughout the years has been reported worldwide in rats, the molluscan intermediate host as well as humans. Angiostrongylus eosinophilic meningitis was first reported from Taiwan, followed 17 years later from Hawai...
متن کاملBurkholderia pseudomallei Type G in Western Hemisphere
Burkholderia pseudomallei isolates from the Western Hemisphere are difficult to differentiate from those from regions in which melioidosis is traditionally endemic. We used internal transcribed spacer typing to determine that B. pseudomallei isolates from the Western Hemisphere are consistently type G. Knowledge of this relationship might be useful for epidemiologic investigations.
متن کاملIntrafirm Trade and Vertical Fragmentation in U.S. Multinational Corporations
Using firm-level data, we document two new facts regarding intrafirm trade and the activities of the foreign affiliates of U.S. multinational corporations. First, intrafirm trade is concentrated among a small number of large affiliates within large multinational corporations; the median affiliate ships nothing to the rest of the corporation. Second, we find that the input-output coefficient lin...
متن کاملThe Impact of Historical and Regional Networks on Trade Volumes in the Western Hemisphere: An Application of Two Gravity Models
The purpose of this paper to identify and analyze the effects of existing trade networks on bilateral trade volumes in the Western Hemisphere using two empirical specifications of the gravity model of international trade. The evidence suggests the trade behavior within the Western Hemisphere is highly influenced by relationships resulting from different types of linkages (i.e., networks). These...
